From RN to LMT

My lifetime goals have been to help others and travel. I have done both, extensively, and am not finished yet! My career began as an ICU nurse and lasted 30+ years in the hospital setting. In order to fulfill my travel lust and help people too, I became a Peace Corps nurse in S.E. Asia. After my job was completed, I chose to return overland by motorcycle and bus (thru the middle east). This fascinating trip from Indonesia to England offered me a good comparison of different approaches to health care. The experience inspired me to a fuller appreciation of our wonderful country. However, it made me realize the lack of importance given to alternative therapies in our health care system.
Our society seems to rely on prescription medicine and surgery. Perhaps more attention should be given to less toxic, less invasive methods for pain and stress management such as; massage, yoga, and herbal medicine. As a nurse, I have seen numerous unnecessary surgeries and harmful effects of medications. As the hospital care became more mechanical, it became less personal and less involved with the emotional needs of the patient. Consequently, I decided to help people in a more comforting, less dangerous, and less invasive way. I have never regretted my career
Through massage, I have relieved, and often eliminated, both temporary and chronic pain and stress.

Some clients have even cancelled their surgery after receiving my therapy, especially carpal tunnel and rotator cuff repairs. If doctors would practice the principal of "less is best if it works" our health care system could be improved. People need to realize that many types of massage are available. Hopefully, the "sensual" type is not practiced by licensed massage therapists. This is one reason why massage is now regulated by licensure in most states. Another common misconception is that massage is only for temporary body/mind relaxation. Swedish massage will offer that. However, deep (soft tissue) massage is the most effective therapy for lasting relief of muscular tightness, pain and range of motion problems. Often thought to be uncomfortable, even painful, deep tissue therapy can feel great, in combination with neuromuscular (NMT) and myofascial release. This combo of massage modes is what I offer in a very unique and soothing flow style. It is not painful, very effective and long lasting.
Education is important in the maintenance of pain control and prevention. With postural analysis and exercise instruction, my clientele are able to identify, understand and modify their origins of discomfort. A maintenance regimen of stretching, exercise and massage keeps my customers feeling better and younger. I now have a greater sense of personal fulfillment than ever.
